Photo Standards

Technical requirements, file formats, and automatic validation checks for uploaded photos

Photo Standards

Every photo you upload goes through automatic validation before it is accepted. This article covers the technical requirements your photos must meet and the checks the system runs.

For practical tips on taking good photos, see Photo Guidelines.

How it works

  1. Upload your photos on the photos step of the onboarding flow.
  2. Each photo is sent to face detection. Photos without a detectable face are rejected.
  3. The system checks that your face is fully in-frame and not cut off at the edges.
  4. Face coverage is calculated — photos where your face is too small relative to the frame are flagged.
  5. Accepted photos are sorted into face photos and full body photos.
  6. Once you have enough accepted photos, you can continue to the next step.

File requirements

PropertyRequirement
File formatsJPEG, PNG (HEIC auto-converted)
Maximum file size50 MB per photo
Minimum dimensions512 x 512 pixels
Minimum face sizeFace must be at least ~410 px across in the original image
Processing sizeResized to max 1024 x 1024 for generation; originals stored separately

Automatic validation checks

Every photo passes through these checks before it is accepted:

  • Face detection — Each photo is scanned for a recognisable face. No face detected means the photo is rejected with "No face found in this photo."
  • Face in-bounds check — Your face must be fully within the frame. Partial faces (cut off at the edge) are rejected with "Please make sure your full face is visible in the photo."
  • Face size check — If your face is too small in the frame, the photo is rejected with "The face is too small. Please try again."

Photos that pass all checks get a green checkmark and are accepted for generation. Photos that fail show an error and do not count. You need at least 1 accepted photo to proceed.

Good to know

  • Full body photos are automatically detected when your face covers less than 20% of the image area. You can also manually mark any photo as full body or face photo using the actions menu.
  • You can upload up to 3 face photos plus 1 optional full-body photo.
  • If a photo fails validation, delete it and upload a better one. There is no penalty for retrying.
