Morgan Saint John has been a people photographer for most of his life and after shooting headshots in Hollywood for the last ten years, has listened to what actors want and has delivered in designing Headshot Pro:

From beginning to end, we are dedicated to perfection and to making sure this is a painless and hopefully even a fun experience for you. We want to capture in black and white the very best of who you really are ... and this is how we do it:

  • Our studio, located near Highland and Melrose, has all the comforts of home (with separate make-up and changing areas, private restroom, kitchen, living room and even a roof lounge to grab a smoke if you must). We want you to feel very relaxed and to have fun.
  • We never rush you. We will spend as much time as it takes to produce fantastic headshots.
  • We have great makeup artists who will listen to what you want.
  • Using digital cameras, you will be able to see and have lots of input on what we are shooting as we go along.
  • This is a collaborative effort!
  • If we're shooting digitally, you can review and edit all of your shots before you leave.

BEFORE THE SHOOT

  • Before the shoot, we will discuss exactly what you want. Are you looking for theatrical or commercial head shots or both? Do you want conventional vertical shots or horizontal shots? Do you want tight close-up shots or pulled-back shots or 3/4 shots?
  • In preparation for your shoot, we will go over a very detailed Checklist (at the bottom of this page)
  • We'll discuss what kind of roles you are going for and any specific requests that your manager or agents have.
  • We will discuss what clothes to bring and if you want we will help you sort through them [suggestions are detailed in The Checklist.]

AFTER THE SHOOT

  • Because we shoot digitaly, you can review our shoot and leave knowing you have great shots.
  • There is no limit to the number of shots we can take. During a typical 3 hour shoot we'll take over 400 shots or the equivalent of more than 10 rolls of film.
  • You will have on-line proof sheets the next day with a password you can also send to your agent, manager, best friend, Mom, etc. and everyone can vote for their favorites on-line.
  • Each thumbnail shot can be enlarged by clicking on it and you can print out any proofsheet or enlargement.
  • You can order your final selections on-line or with a phone call and we will give you the image files on a CD. If you want we can also send them directly to a reproduction house.

TO HAVE FOR THE CONSULTATION:

  • Know what kind of headshots you want ("commercial", "theatrical", "soap", "corporate/industrial", etc.)
  • Know what kind of roles you are going for.
  • Check with your agent/manager to get the specifics of what they are looking for.
  • Bring your old head shots - the ones you love and the ones you hate. Bring other photographs of yourself as well. Sometimes the most helpful shots to see are the ones you hate. They tell us what to avoid.
  • Look at other head shots and think about what you want. Bring samples of both what you like and hate.
  • Think about whether you have a preference for vertical or horizontal shots. And how tight?
  • Much of this preparation is addressed in our Appointment Form - which you can e-mail to us in advance and/or print out and bring with you.

TO PREPARE FOR THE SHOOT:

  • Practice in front of the mirror. As silly as it may sound it really helps. In addition to your Academy Award acceptance speech, practice leaning into the camera with those clear, expressive, alive eyes that reveal confidence and irresistibility. Practice a variety of looks and emotions consistent with the roles you're going for.
  • We want you to look and feel your best so please do not party the night before. Go to bed early!
  • As much as possible, prepare yourself to be in your most confident and positive mood. Don't come straight from a funeral. And if you can choose another time to have a fight with your best friend, please do.
  • The night before, hang up your clothes on hangers and check for defects.
  • Make sure you've eaten and have energy to last.

TO BRING TO THE SHOOT:

CLOTHES - Bring at least 4 different shirts (tops) in addition to a pair of comfortable blue jeans or pants for ¾ shots.

For the majority of headshots, the clothes you select should be informal and low-key. You don't want your clothes to distract people from looking at your face. Solids work best; avoid loud patterns (checkerboard, polka dots and stripes), and anything else that will take attention away from you.

White works with some skin tones and hair colors so use your best judgment; but usually darker and brighter colors and black are better. Anything that will photograph dark gray is also good. If you have fair skin, avoid clothes with pastels and cream colors (too little contrast.)

Choose fabrics that hang well. Some shirts (tops) wrinkle more than others.

Bring an assortment of T-shirts, sweaters, work shirts, tank tops, etc....with a variety of different collars and necklines (V-necks often work well). Layers also work well.

Jewelry or accessories should be simple. Women should bring light and dark undergarments. If wearing glasses, have the lenses taken out prior to the shoot. (Any eyewear store will do this free-of-charge.)

If you need some additional pointers for what "looks" to achieve, here are more specific suggestions for the four most popular categories:

1) For Commercials: All-American, wholesome. Sell your type. Clothes from The GAP, LL Bean, J Crew, etc. No black. Layers work well.

2) For Film: Be Yourself! Be creative and original. Wear your favorite clothes that you look good in and "that are "YOU.

3) For Soaps: (Women): More glamorous, elegant and upscale. An all-over sexier look ("Betsy Johnson" to high fashion.) (Men): Follow "Film" suggestions above.

4) Corporate/Industrials/Spokesperson: (Men): Dark jacket & tie, white or pastel shirt/conservative. (Women): Wear your favorite suit.

If you have a question about a piece of clothing, bring it with you!

HAIR AND MAKE-UP - Arrive with a clean face and your hair styled as you would for an audition.

Bring old headshots and snapshots of yourself where you like and dislike your hair and makeup.

If you're planning on doing your shoot with straight hair and then later curly hair, please let us know in advance.

If you have special makeup -- bring it. We have most hair accessories you'll need, but if there are any special appliances that you normally use, bring them along (special rollers, curling irons, etc.)

MUSIC - This is the most important thing not to forget!!!

Bring CDs you love….that put you in a great mood, that make you happy and give you energy. If you are going for some "heavy and deep" theatrical shots bring some of your favorite "heavy and deep" music.

FOOD - While we are well supplied, if there are any special food or beverages you want, please bring them.

MONEY - Please bring two checks: one for the studio and a separate check for the make-up artist. Cash is fine but we do not take credit cards.
